VIRTUAL REALITY THERAPY

WHAT IS VR THERAPY?


Virtual Reality Therapy is an experiential, exposure-based therapy to assist clients in resolving
specific anxieties, fears, and phobias.
Some of the issues VR Therapy can treat include:

  • Fear of Flying

  • Fear of Driving

  • Claustrophobia

  • Fear of Insects, Rodents, Spiders, Birds, and Dogs

  • Fear of Needles and Hospitals

  • Social Anxiety, and

  • Fear of Heights

In VR Therapy you will identify and explore the origin of your fears and together we will utilize
techniques from all of the following modalities of therapy to create an integrative treatment
plan:

 

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapies

  • Visualization

  • Mindfulness, Meditation and Breathing

  • Hypnosis

  • Exposure Therapy, and

  • Systematic Desensitization

VR Therapy has been found to be the next best thing to In Vivo (live, face-to-face exposure).


ABOUT THE SESSION


Our initial sessions will include a full assessment of your fears and together we will create a
plan of action. I will then provide tools and psychoeducation to help you walk through your
fears with calmness and confidence. I will also customize a series of virtual reality simulations
using O’VRcome to gradually allow you to be exposed to the feared situation using the new
tools we have practiced together.


O’VRcome will then send you a link that you can download to your phone so that you can
practice confronting your fears using VR to conquer them one step at a time.
In our next session, you will receive a VR Headset and I will show you how to use the simulations
at home and in session.

We will also work together on building a resilience toolkit that will allow you to move through
the simulations with less and less fear.


To fully benefit from VR you will need to practice a little each day so that the skills you learn in
the session will become part of you and your fears will dissipate.


WHY WORK WITH A THERAPIST RATHER THAN JUST DOWNLOAD AN APP?


As we all know there are hundreds of do-it-yourself apps and many of them can be super
useful. However, to resolve fears and phobias it is often necessary to identify and treat the
core issues driving the fears. Working with a licensed, experienced therapist can help you
resolve the root cause. I can also help you utilize a full array of techniques to resolve the issue
once and for all.


In individual VR therapy, we use much more than just VR. VR will be one of the tools that we
use. We will individualize your plan as we go along to meet your specific needs rather than
using a cookie-cutter approach.
